The Patriot Game
The United States _became_ (become) independent in 1776, but the road to independence _began_ (begin) many years before that. As new settlers _came_ (come) to the American continent in the 1600s, they _found_ (find) life very difficult. They _brought_ (bring) many skills, but they _met_ (meet) many difficulties. Settlers in the southern colonies such as Maryland and Virginia _got_ (get) more support from England because the English _sent_ (send) them to the new world. But the colonists in New England, who _left_ (leave) England in protest, _ran_ (run) into more problems. They _broke_ (break) their ties with England right away and _built__ (build) their own society…or they tried to. Being colonists _cost_ (cost) them a lot. They _paid_ (pay) taxes on tea, on stamps, and anything that they _bought_ (buy) or _sold_ (sell) but England _dug_ (dig) deeper and deeper and_made_ (make) it impossible to live as a colonist.
You probably _heard_ (hear) about how Paul Revere _rode_ (ride) through the
night in 1775 to warn the
colonists that the British were coming.
However, Revere also _fought_ (fight) for independence long before that. He _stood_ (stand) with the rebels in 1770 at the Boston
Massacre and nearly _lost_ (lose) his life
that day when five "patriots" died.
The colonists _paid_ (pay) a
bitter
price before they _won_ (win) the
Revolutionary War in 1781. When the United
States _rose_ (rise) as a
nation and _flew_ (fly) its
own flag, it _shook_ (shake) the
old European powers and the world has never been the same.
